International Star Class Yacht Racing Association - District 6

6 local Stars competed in beautiful weather for the Fleets - Congrats to Al Cullen and Chuck Hansen for their win. Thanks to Brett for the RC work in trying conditions.

There was plenty of on the water confusion and dock conversation about the correct finishing procedure in the two shortened races.  As you recall , the tide was very strong and the wind light, particularly in the last race.

I took the advice of Judge Rick Hatch, so that we will be better informed next time. Here is part of my email thread with Rick:

And here is part of his response:
Mark 2 was a rounding mark, which the SIs prescribed was to be left to port on the first downwind leg.  However, provided that the race was shortened BEFORE the first boat arrived at mark #2 at the end of the second leg of the race, then per RRS 32.2(a), the finish line was BETWEEN the nearby mark #2 and the staff displaying Code Flag S aboard the RC boat on which S was displayed.  Since the RC boat was in its original position, this meant that mark #2 was to be left to starboard and Option B was the correct way to finish.  The boat that chose Option C was properly scored DNF because it never crossed the finish line of the shortened course.  Actually, the same could arguably apply to boats that finished per Option A, but there is a World Sailing Case that says that if the finish line is heavily skewed then a boat can cross the finish line in either direction.
See you all on the October 14-15 weekend,
Bruce

Yes, Bruce, I agree with you. Option B is better :-)
